Women+ of oPEN Lab continues highlighting and celebrating the contributions of women and individuals of diverse genders within the oPEN Lab project. The third feature in the series is Annika Urbas working as communications specialist at the Tartu Regional Energy Agency, Estonia. Annika is actively contributing to the oPEN Lab project in Living Lab Tartu. Below she answers the questions we asked her to know more about her professional journey.

From the very beginning, I have been involved in the oPEN Lab project. My journey has been one of learning, adapting, and contributing in ways that I did not expect. As I continue working on this project while raising my first child, who is soon to be 1 year and 5 months old, I find myself reflecting on the unique challenges and rewards of balancing these two significant aspects of my life.

My Role in the oPEN Lab Project

In the Tartu living lab, I play a crucial role in facilitating collaboration, ensuring smooth project management, and supporting the diverse teams involved. My work focuses on bridging the gap between technical experts and other stakeholders, ensuring that project goals align with broader societal and environmental needs. This includes coordinating activities and managing communication among team members.

Additionally, I contribute to the project by bringing a fresh perspective to problem-solving, emphasizing user-centered approaches and the importance of inclusivity. My background outside of engineering allows me to approach challenges from a different angle, ensuring that the project remains accessible and beneficial to a broad range of people.

Professional Growth Through the oPEN Lab Project

Being part of this project has been an incredible opportunity for personal and professional growth. I have gained invaluable experience in working with interdisciplinary teams, learning about sustainability and technological innovation, and improving my project management and communication skills. The dynamic and collaborative nature of the oPEN Lab project has challenged me to step out of my comfort zone, continuously learn new concepts, and adapt to evolving project demands.

Moreover, working on this initiative while raising my child has taught me resilience, time management, and the importance of work-life balance. It has reinforced my belief that meaningful contributions to innovation and sustainability can come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. My journey with the oPEN Lab project proves that dedication and adaptability can open doors to new opportunities, even without a traditional technical background.

As I look ahead, I am excited to continue contributing to the oPEN Lab project, fostering collaboration, and advocating for more inclusive approaches in innovation. This journey has shown me that professional development is not just about acquiring technical skills but also about embracing new perspectives, overcoming challenges, and making a meaningful impact.
