Video: Behind the Scenes: Renovation works of oPEN Lab in Genk entering final phase

Dec 13, 2024

The moment is almost here — as the renovation works in New Texas, Genk, part of the oPEN Lab project, are nearing completion – we figured it was time to give you an update of all the hard work that’s been done in Genk over the past couple of months. To show the transformation of the New Texas neighborhood, a video has been made that offers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the project.

The video showcases how innovative techniques and collective building solutions come together to turn the New Texas neighborhood into a positive energy neighborhood. It highlights key aspects of the renovation process, such as the assembly of prefabricated walls, which includes both the addition of extra insulation as well as an aesthetically upgraded façade in one measure. Key technological features like the outside energy box — which clusters HVAC techniques such as a heat pump, ventilation unit, smart control systems, a storage vessel and an inverter for photovoltaic panels — are also featured. Rooftop renovations, including the integration of green roofs, insulation, and renewable energy from photovoltaic panels, demonstrate how sustainability is embedded in the rooftop of the building.

The renovation works are well on track, with all 27 homes planned to be completed by the end of the year. As such, the project enters a new stage, transforming the Waterschei neighborhood into a real-life living lab for various innovative techniques, both at the individual building level and at the collective neighborhood level. The next step is to complete the data integration process, so monitoring and optimized control can begin, supporting high-quality research..
