Renovation Milestone Reached at San Pedro, in Pamplona’s Living Lab

Mar 28, 2024

The oPEN Living Lab Pamplona is proud to announce it reached a significant milestone in the ongoing renovation of the San Pedro housing group. The project, which aims to revitalise two apartment blocks, has achieved a crucial phase with the completion of the installation of high-performance interior retrofitting cladding.

The recently installed cladding utilizes vacuum insulation panels. These panels boast a thermal transmittance three to four times lower than other conventional insulation methods. This technological advancement not only enhances the building’s energy efficiency but also minimizes the loss of usable area during the renovation process.

One of the standout features of this renovation solution is its ability to preserve the building’s exterior appearance. The oPEN Living Lab Pamplona has demonstrated a keen understanding of the importance of heritage preservation while incorporating modern, sustainable construction practices.

The images below depict the evolution of the renovation process. These images, captured at different distances, showcase the transformation of the wall over time.

Looking ahead, the oPEN Living Lab Pamplona  is gearing up for the next milestone in the renovation journey: the installation of roof photovoltaic modules.

oPEN Lab promotes the application of innovative energy rehabilitation techniques, with the aim of moving towards energy-positive neighbourhoods. In the oPEN Living Lab Pamplona, Pamplona City Council has the support of the National Renewable Energy Centre (CENER), the University of the Basque Country, the architecture and engineering firm AH asociados, and OBENASA. European funding through the Horizon 2020 programme will account for around 16% of the investment made in this refurbishment of San Pedro.
