oPEN Lab’s New Virtual Tour in Genk

Jan 8, 2026

What does the energy transition actually look like at neighbourhood level? With its newly launched 360° virtual dashboard, the oPEN Lab project invites everyone to explore this question first-hand.

Set in Genk, the virtual tour showcases how two districts, Nieuw Texas and Tuinwijk Waterschei, are being transformed into pioneering Positive Energy Neighbourhoods. Visitors can digitally walk through renovated homes, discover innovative technologies such as heat pumps, solar systems, smart ventilation and energy boxes, and explore collective solutions including green roofs and shared community spaces.

Beyond technology, the tour also highlights the social and cultural dimensions of the transition, from resident support measures to creative elements like the “Now or Never” solar artwork. Designed to be fully immersive, the dashboard allows users to experience the neighbourhoods remotely, almost as if they were there in person.

The virtual tour is now live and open to all, offering an accessible way to understand how integrated, people-centred energy transitions are taking shape on the ground.
