Heat from the depths for a Positive Energy (Garden) City

Jul 10, 2025

Another important step has been taken toward sustainable and fossil-free heating in the heritage-rich garden city of Waterschei, in Genk.

In the backyard of one of the oPEN Lab test homes in Genk, Peeters & Zonen carried out two geothermal drillings, each 150 meters deep, for the installation of a geothermal heat pump. As part of the full renovation of this 100-year-old house, underfloor heating will be installed in all rooms.

In this neighbourhood, a total of so far six test homes (and their residents) form the backbone of the oPEN Lab project. Here, energy-efficient technologies such as heat pumps, local energy production and storage, and smart energy management are tested under realistic, everyday conditions.

Thanks to these setups, we are building a future in which neighbourhoods not only consume less energy, but actively contribute to the energy grid as positive energy districts. The insights we gain here help us develop feasible and scalable solutions for similar neighbourhoods across Europe.

A warm thank you to all partners and residents who are helping to make this energy transition possible!
