Friends of oPEN Lab: NAITEC’s Electric and Autonomous Vehicle Platform

Jan 13, 2026

Pamplona oPEN Living Lab has many friends and supporters. One of them is NAITEC, the Technology Center specialised in mobility and mechatronics in Navarre.

NAITEC developed an electric and autonomous vehicle, as well as a  platform built on open-source software and a Robot Operating System (ROS), enabling flexible development of autonomous driving applications. An onboard processor ensures real-time vehicle control, while a high-precision navigation system delivers centimetre-level positioning, making the vehicle well suited for operation in dense urban settings.

A flexible platform for neighbourhood use cases

Thanks to its fully electric drive-by-wire system, with an electric motor integrated into each wheel, the vehicle allows independent steering on two or four wheels and bidirectional movement. This high level of manoeuvrability is ideal for neighbourhood-scale applications. A wireless remote controller also allows manual operation when required.

The vehicle is equipped with a rich sensor suite, including 360° LiDAR, RTK GPS, radar, IMU, ultrasound sensors and a front camera, supporting autonomous functions such as route planning, mapping and obstacle avoidance. Integrated 5G connectivity enables seamless communication with external systems and digital platforms.

One of the most promising applications of the NAITEC platform is last-mile logistics. Equipped with a dual-temperature refrigerated locker, the vehicle can deliver food and medicines efficiently and with zero local emissions, directly supporting local services and residents.

Key specifications

  • Propulsion: Fully electric (12V & 72V batteries)
  • Dimensions: 156 × 294 × 157 cm (W × L × H)
  • Steering: Independent four-wheel steering, bidirectional
  • Maximum load: 1,000 kg
  • Range: 70–100 km
  • Maximum speed: 40 km/h

NAITEC vehicle meets residents

During the Energy Festival held in November 2025, residents of the Rochapea neighbourhood were able to interact directly with the electric and autonomous vehicle. By scanning a QR code, citizens could engage with the system and open the vehicle’s cabinet, experiencing the technology first-hand.

By joining the Friends of oPEN Lab, NAITEC contributes advanced, open, and scalable technology that helps transform neighbourhoods into living laboratories for energy efficiency and sustainable mobility.
