The first two test homes in Waterschei have taken a major step towards a sustainable future. In addition to the previously installed ventilation systems and heat pumps, solar panels are now also placed on the roof!
Under a radiant sun, Intellisol installed solar panels on the well-positioned roofs of these century-old miner’s houses. In total, 13.9 kWp were installed across both homes, optimally utilizing both sloped and flat roof spaces. This is an important step towards a positive energy neighbourhood , where the community produces more renewable energy than it consumes. Furthermore, the homes will be equipped with a home battery to store the generated solar energy. This will enable the residents to harness their own energy for household use and to power their heat pumps.
oPEN Lab is collaborating closely with the owners of these test houses. The homeowners are preparing their houses to be “heat pump ready” by enhancing the insulation. VITO is overseeing the installation of energy-efficient technologies, while Stebo is providing comprehensive support to the residents throughout the renovation journey.
Researchers from VITO are monitoring these installations and analyzing the data gathered, which will provide valuable insights into how older homes can contribute to the energy transition. Together, we are taking important steps toward an energy-efficient future.
Meanwhile, the owners of the first two test homes have moved into their newly renovated and energy-efficient homes after extensive renovation work. Stebo’s advisors, Martine and Stéphanie, paid a visit to the homeowners, bringing along a small housewarming gift – coffee and sugar waffles!
