VITO

VITO is a leading international research and service centre. It provides knowledge and technological innovations that facilitate the transition to a more sustainable society. Vito does this in the field of energy, chemistry, materials, health technology and land use. Vito unites different parties in a sustainable value chain. By cooperation, expansion and development of expertise, Vito can make smarter use of existing sustainable solutions and develop new technologies.

VITO is, together with KU Leuven, UHasselt and imec, part of EnergyVille. EnergyVille is a collaboration in the field of sustainable energy and intelligent energy systems. EnergyVille develops technology and knowledge to support public and private stakeholders in the transition to an energy-efficient, decarbonised, and sustainable urban environment. As an energy R&D innovation hub, located in the industry-oriented ecosystem of Thor Park (Genk, Belgium), EnergyVille offers an attractive environment for energy research and industrial product development.

Role in Project

VITO is the coordinator of the oPEN Lab project, contributing its extensive technical and management experience from other Horizon 2020 projects. Being part of EnergyVille, it is also a leading partner of the Living Lab in Genk and responsible for the overall innovation management through the innovation management committee.

Apart from these main activities, VITO is involved in the implementation of various tasks throughout the work plan, taking a proactive role, for example, with optimisation of embodied energy and strategies for building optimal operation within a PEN, improvement of industrialised renovation process throughout the entire value chain. VITO contributes to the data collection, performance assessment and life-cycle impact analysis related to the Living Lab in Genk. Finally, they contribute to efforts on upscaling and replication of the oPEN Lab PEN approach and proactively engage in a wide range of dissemination activities aimed at maximising the impact of the oPEN Lab project.
